Khar West Neighbourhood Guide: Where to Eat, Shop and Unwind

Khar West sits between Bandra West and Santacruz West in Mumbai’s western suburbs. It is mostly residential, but it is full of restaurants, cafes and shops, and it is close to the sea. Here is what you need to know if you are staying in the area.

What Khar West is like

Think quiet residential lanes, older bungalows next to newer apartment buildings, and busy main roads lined with places to eat. It feels calmer than the busiest parts of Bandra, but you are only a few minutes away from them.

Restaurants in Khar West

Khar West has one of the best food scenes in the western suburbs. You will find:

• Modern cafes for breakfast and coffee.
• Restaurants serving everything from coastal Indian food to Asian and European dishes.
• Bars and lounges for the evening.
• Small local places for quick, affordable meals.

The roads around Khar station and the stretch towards Linking Road have the most choice. Many places get busy on weekend evenings, so book ahead if you can.

Linking Road

One of Mumbai’s best-known shopping streets runs through Khar West and Bandra. Shoes, clothes, bags and street stalls, plus big brand stores.

The streets near Khar station have fruit and vegetable sellers, grocery stores and pharmacies for everyday needs.

Walks and fresh air

• Carter Road promenade in Bandra is a popular sea-facing walk, especially at sunset.
• Bandstand and Bandra Fort offer sea views a short drive away.
• Juhu Beach is a short drive north.

Getting around

• Khar Road station: 5 to 7 minutes from our building, on the Western line.
• Bandra: 10 to 12 minutes by road.
• BKC: 12 to 15 minutes by road.
• Mumbai airport: 20 to 25 minutes by road.

P. D. Hinduja Hospital’s Khar facility is on 11th Road in Khar West. Lilavati Hospital and Holy Family Hospital are in Bandra.
