Mumbai Local Train Guide for Visitors: How to Travel from Khar Road and Bandra

Mumbai’s local trains carry millions of people every day. They are fast, cheap and often quicker than a car over long distances. They can also be very crowded. This guide helps you use them with confidence.
The three main lines
- Western line: runs north from Churchgate in South Mumbai through Bandra, Khar Road, Santacruz and Andheri. This is the line you will use most if you stay in Bandra or Khar West. Our Khar West neighbourhood guide shows what is around the station.
- Central line: runs from CSMT in South Mumbai towards the central and eastern suburbs.
- Harbour line: links South Mumbai with Navi Mumbai and some western stations.

Khar Road and Bandra stations
Khar Road station is 5 to 7 minutes from our service apartments in Khar West. Bandra station is one stop south. From here you can head south towards Dadar and Churchgate, or north towards Andheri and Borivali.

Some fast trains do not stop at smaller stations like Khar Road. Check the indicator boards on the platform, or change at Bandra.
Buying a ticket
- Ticket counter: at every station. Tell them your destination and class.
- Mobile app: Indian Railways’ UTS app lets you buy local tickets on your phone.
- Smart card or ticket machines: available at many stations.
Always travel with a valid ticket. Ticket checks happen often.
First class or general?
First class costs more but is usually less crowded, especially outside peak hours. Most stations have marked spots on the platform showing where first-class coaches stop. There are also ladies-only compartments.
Peak hours to avoid
Weekday mornings and evenings are extremely crowded, roughly when people travel to and from work. If you can, travel in the middle of the day or later in the evening.
Safety and comfort tips
- Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket or a zipped bag.
- Move towards the door one or two stations before your stop.
- Let people get off before you get on.
- Never stand at the open door or lean out.
- During heavy monsoon rain, trains can be delayed. See our monsoon guide.

When to take a cab instead
For short trips, late at night, with luggage or with elderly family members, an app cab is usually easier. For example, the airport and BKC are both easiest by road from Khar West. See how to get from Mumbai airport to Bandra and Khar West.
